MUSKEGON, Mich.-- The Trine wrestling team produced several successful performances in the season-opening Ben McMullen Open, hosted by Muskegon Community College.
Caleb Maddox (Russiaville, Ind./Western) had an impressive debut in his first collegiate tournament as he placed second in the 133-lb class. Sophomore Zach Krumlauf (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) placed third in the 149-lb division in his Thunder debut. Senior Joe Stasiak (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) competed in the heavyweight division for the first time in his collegiate career and was able to notch a fourth-place finish. The trio of top-four finishers highlighted Trine's performance in the event.
Maddox was dominant in winning his first three matches to advance to the finals. The freshman opened the day with a pin in 6:35 in his first collegiate match. He then outscored his next two opponents by a 22-6 margin, earning wins by decision and major decision. He was ultimately defeated by Ricky Stringfellow of Lincoln Community College by 5-1 decision in the championship match.
Krumlauf debuted with a 7-2 win by decision before picking up a quick and decisive pin in just 1:35 . A loss by tech fall dropped the sophomore into the semifinals of the consolation bracket, where he was able to rally back for a pair of wins for the third-place finish. He capped off the day with an 11-4 decision over Corey Perkins-Willet of Muskegon Community College.
Stasiak saw success in his first career efforts as a heavyweight. The junior opened with a victory by major decision and also won a pair of matches by decision to finish 3-2 on the day. Stasiak gave Muskegon Community College's Jonathon Morris a tough match in the third-place contest before dropping by 4-2 decision.
Trevor Albert (Morris, Ill./Morris) picked up four victories, including one pin before bowing out in the consolation semifinals. Albert's pin came in 2:45 and he outscored his opponents by a 19-6 margin in his three victories by decision.
David Moore (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion), Brandon Gay (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) and Michael Conner (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) each added a pair of wins on the day. Gay and Moore each picked up a pin in the tournament.

Trine will host the Trine Invitational next Saturday, Nov. 14 in Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic Recreation Center. Matches are slated to begin at 10 a.m.
