ANGOLA, Ind.-- The Trine wrestling team will compete in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship this Saturday at Wabash College.
The event marks the beginning of the wrestling postseason. The top three wrestlers in each weight class advance to the NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships, set to be held Mar. 11-12 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Thunder have had at least one representative in the national meet the last six years.
Caleb Maddox (Russiaville, Ind./Western) represents Trine's top performer entering the regional matches. The freshman owns a team-best 24-13 record on the year. The 133-lb'er has won eight matches by pin and has won five of his last six matches. He most recently nothced a third-place finish at the Mid-States Invitational.
Jeffrey Helm (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) carries a 13-11 record in the Midwest Regional. Despite battling injuries, the sophomore has improved his winning-percentage by 16 percentage points this year. The 141-lb wrestler will compete in a class that includes four nationally-ranked wrestlers.
David Moore (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and Joe Stasiak (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) also carry double-digit win totals into the regional meet. The 125-lb Moore has won 12 matches this season while Stasiak, a heavyweight, has won 10 bouts.
The NCAA Division III Wrestling Midwest Regional will be held at Wabash College's Knowling Fieldhouse. Matches begin Saturday at 9 a.m.
