ANGOLA, Ind. – Trine wrestling defeated Adrian, 29-15, in a Thursday night dual in Hershey Hall.
The Thunder came to wrestle against the Bulldogs, winning seven out of the 10 matches. Trine came attacking having at least two takedowns in each match. Jaycee Jensen (Burns Harbor, Ind. / Chesterton) and Anthony Neal (Sturgis, Mich. / Sturgis) were able to win by pin for Trine. Brendan Stevens (Battle Creek, Mich. / Lakeview), Jeffrey Helm (Westfield, Ind. / Westfield), Caleb Maddox (Russiaville, Ind. / Western), Nick Miller (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Snider) and Kevin Groves (Indianapolis, Ind. / Franklin Central) all recorded wins for the Thunder on the night.
Stevens hit a slide-by on Alex Baysinger to score the first takedown of the match. Stevens turned Baysinger to his back to get near fall points, but Baysinger was able to escape with seconds left in the first period. Stevens led 6-1 going into the second period. Stevens quickly scored on a reversal to get two and extend his lead in the second period. Baysinger was able to get an escape at the start of the third period, but Stevens was able to come back with a takedown to win by a major decision, 11-3.
Helm struck first to get the takedown on Kyle Briggs and the 2-0 lead in the first period. In the start of the second period, Helm was able to get a reversal to add two points to his lead. He let Briggs up to keep his fast-pace offense going and quickly got another takedown and near-fall points in less than 25 seconds. Helm led Briggs 8-1 going into the final period. The third point started with Briggs getting a quick escape, but Helm was able to come back with a quick single leg takedown and get back points. Helm won by major decision, 15-2, and to give Trine the lead over the Bulldogs in the dual, 8-6.
Maddox went to work right off the whistle scoring the first takedown and riding Ty Jasman out for the final two minutes of the first period. A tough ride out in the second period by Maddox allowed him to turn Jasman to get near fall points, giving Maddox a 4-0 lead going into the final period. Maddox got to his feet in the opening seconds of the third period to get the escape. Maddox won by decision 6-0 and extended the Thunder's lead over the Bulldogs, 11-6.
Miller got the first takedown quickly in the first period, but in the final seconds of the first period James Renaud got an escape. Miller led 2-1 going into the second period. In the second, Miller got an escape and kept attacking to get another takedown. Miller led 5-2 going into the third period and went on to win by decision, 6-3. The Thunder led Adrian 14-6 half way through the dual.
Groves scored on a quick double-leg to get a takedown on James Pace. Pace got an escape, but Groves came back with another takedown. Once again, Pace got another escape but Groves answered with another takedown. Groves led Pace 6-2 going into the second period. In the second, Groves got an escape to increase his lead, 7-2. In the third, Groves was able to get another two takedowns on Pace. Groves won by a decision, 10-2, and increase Trine's lead to 17-9 in the dual.
An action packed first period of takedowns, reversals and near fall points gave Jensen the 10-2 lead over John Cooper before Jensen got the pin wat 2:12. The win was Jensen's second by fall this year,
Neal got the quick pin in the first period over Riley Griffin. The win was Neal's first as a collegiate wrestler. He earned his win by fall in 1:57.
The Thunder return to the mats when they travel to Washingtion & Lee Duals Monday Dec. 19. Matches will begin at 9 a.m.
