MUSKEGON, MICH.  --  The Trine University wrestling team opened the 2017 season by competing in the unscored Ben McMullen Open hosted by Muskegon Community College in Muskegon, Mich.

No team scores were kept, but highlighting the day for the Thunder was a second-place individual finish by sophomore Austin Farrell (Hopkins, Mich./Allegan) and three third-place showings by sophomore Brendan Stevens (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview), freshman Riley Rasler (LaGrange, Ind./Prairie Heights) and sophomore Nick Miller (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider).  In addition, Trine also had a fourth-place finisher in junior Caleb Maddox (Russiaville, Ind./Western).

Farrell finished second in the 184-pound weight class and began his day with back-to-back pins to advance to the first-place match where he finished as runner-up after falling to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponent Olivet (Mich.) College's Ryan Clark by major decision.

Brendan Stevens finished, 5-1, on the day with his only loss coming in his first matchup of the event in the 125-pound weight class.  Stevens then won his next five matches, including a pair of technical falls by shutting out his opponent in both matches, 15-0 and 16-0, and worked his way through the consolation bracket to advance to the third-place match.  In the match, Stevens captured the victory by decision, 8-1, to claim third place.

Rasler began his 157-pound weight class with three straight wins by a pair of tech falls and a pin in his second-round match to advance to the semifinals where he fell by decision.  He recorded his second pin of the day in the consolation semifinal, pinning his opponent in a time of 6:51 and then went on to take the third-place match by tech fall with a final score of 16-1.

Miller dropped his first match at 174 pounds, but then rallied with five consecutive wins to claim third place and end the meet with a 5-1 mark.  Miller won his semifinal match in the consolation bracket by major decision, 11-3, before taking a 5-2 decision in the third-place matchup.

At 141 pounds, Caleb Maddox won his first three matches by tech fall, a decision and major decision to advance to the semifinals where he lost by a decision and move into the consolation bracket.  After winning his consolation semifinal match by way of a forfeit, Maddox fell just shy of winning his third-place match, 4-3, to finish in fourth place overall.

Trine will host the Trine Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation Center.  The event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
