OLIVET, Mich. -- The Trine University men's wrestling team traveled to the Comet Duals hosted by Olivet College where they competed in four dual matches, their first of the season, finishing the day with an 0-4 record.
The team started the day by squaring off with Muskegon Community College and turned in their best performance of the day winning three matches while still dropping the contest 35-12. The Thunder picked up their first win in the 141-pound weight class where Kenneth Garcia (Sturgis, Mich. / Sturgis) defeated his opponent with a pin at the 52 second mark.
Two more student athletes would win by decision for the team. Ethan Nash (Franklin, Ind. / Franklin Community) took the 165-pound match 13-7 and Kyler Bills (Forty Wayne, Ind. / Carroll) took the heavyweight match 3-2.
The second dual of the day saw Millikin come away with a 45-6 victory. Trine's lone victory in the match came from Andrew Williamson (Mount Gilead, Ohio / Mount Gilead) in the 184-pound weight class. He picked up a victory with a pin at the 1:47 mark of the match.
Ohio Northern also held the Thunder to just one victory on their way to handing them a 36-3 loss. Senior Owen Conklin (West Lafayette, Ind. / Harrison) recorded those points for the team with a 6-4 decision in the 174-pound match.
The final match of the day saw the team face off with Grand Valley State University and falling 28-9. The Thunder earned their points with three wins by decision in the dual all giving wrestlers their second win of the day. Garcia took the 141-pound match by the score of 2-1, Nash got his in the 165-pound match by the score of 11-5 and Conklin won 7-4 in the 174-pound match.
The team will return to a tournament style event in their next competition when they travel to the Ohio Northern Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 4. The competition is set to start at 9 a.m.
