ALMA, Mich. -- The Trine University men's wrestling team opened the 2021-22 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) season with a come from behind 24-22 victory over their hosts from Alma College.
The Scots started the contest with five straight wins in the lower weight classes. They took the 125 weight class and 157 weight class by technical fall along with the 141 and 149 weight classes with decisions. The Thunder had to surrender the 133 match so Alma would have a 22-0 lead going into the 165 match.
From there the match was all about the Thunder. Sophomore Ethan Nash (Franklin, Ind. / Franklin Community) started the comeback with a 5-4 decision in the 165 match which was followed up with a 6-0 decision in the 174 match by senior Owen Conklin (West Lafayette, Ind. / Harrison).
The pair of wins made score 22-6, leaving some more work to be done. The team cut into that lead heavily in the 184 match where sophomore Andrew Williamson (Mount Gilead, Ohio / Mount Gilead) won with a pin a the 2:45 mark of the match. It was followed by a victory by forfeit in the 197 match for Ryan Mahoney (Westfield, Ind. / Westfield).
With the score at 22-18, the Thunder would need at least a major decision to tie the dual. Sophomore Jacob Jackson (Toledo, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) came up with more than that, pinning his opponent at the 6:00 mark to secure the 24-22 victory for Trine.
The victory is the team's second dual win of the season. They improve to 2-8 overall and start the MIAA season 1-0 with the win. They will continue their season when they host the MIAA Championships, which will pit individual MIAA wrestlers against each other in a tournament style event. The event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 16.
