MUSKEGON, Mich. – Five members of the Trine University men's wrestling team posted podium finishes at the Ben McMullen Open hosted by Muskegon Community College.
Headlining the Thunder delegation was senior Joseph Langeman who won the 133 bracket. He opened the day with a major decision (13-5) victory before winning his next two matches by decision (4-2 and 12-6). The three wins put him in the championship match where he had his best performance of the day winning by tech fall with a score of 16-0.
A pair of Thunder faced each other in the semifinal round at 141. Jett Boots came out on top in that match to earn a spot in the championship match where he would fall by decision to finish second. On his way to the finals, he recorded two tech fall victories and a decision.
Kenneth Garcia was defeated by Boots in the semifinals and moved to the consolation semifinals where he won by tech fall (19-3) to advance to the third-place match before ultimately finishing in fourth. Along the way he recorded a pin and a decision.
In the 149 weight class, Isaac Hawkins was the leader for Trine. He won his first four matches to advance to the championship match. He started the day with a tech fall and two pins to reach the semifinals. There he came up with an 8-5 decision before falling in the championship match, finishing second.
The final podium finish for the Thunder came at 165, where Lakin Webb turned in a runner-up performance. He began the day with two straight decisions before posting his most decisive victory in the quarterfinal match with a major decision (13-5). He won a thriller in the semifinals by the score of 6-5 to earn his spot in the championship match.
The Thunder will continue their season when they host the Trine Invite on Saturday, November 11. That tournament will be contested in the ARC and is set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
