FRANKLIN, IND.-- A three-goal second half led the Trine women's soccer team to a season-opening 4-3 victory over Franklin Friday night at Faught Stadium.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the first half, the Thunder scored three times in the second half and survived three goals by the Grizzlies to open the season 1-0 for the third-consecutive year. Skyler Reed (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) put together a kind of night rarely seen in collegiate soccer. The junior made six saves in net as goalkeeer, and converted offensively on two penalty kicks. Franklin opens the season 0-1.
Reed got the Thunder on the board with her first penalty kick goal at the 24:44 mark of the first half. Trine would take that lead into the half.
Things would remain quiet until the final 15 minutes of play, when Franklin's Jessica Silva scored at the 75:11 mark to tie the score. Reed had the answer just 21 seconds later, depositing her second PK goal of the game into the back of the net to give Trine the 2-1 lead.
A little over three minutes later, Gigi Jarratt (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) gave the Thunder a two-goal advantage with her first-career goal. Trisha King (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) picked up the assist.
Masey Bunn cut the Trine advantage back to one, scoring at the 82:05 mark to cut the score to 3-2. Freshman Carly Osinski (Carmel, Ind./Guerin Catholic) picked an opportune moment for her first collegiate goal, scoring 57 seconds later with what would prove to be the game-winner for the Thunder. Jarratt picked up her first-career assist on the goal.
Kayla Dragstem scored an unassisted goal with less than three minutes remaining to account for the final 4-3 margin.
Trine returns to action tomorrow, when they will face Rose-Hulman in Franklin, Ind. The match is slated to begin at 5:00 p.m.
NOTE: This release has been corrected to include the change in scoring on the third goal. A previous version of this story credited the goal to Trisha King.
