ANGOLA, IND.-- The Trine women's soccer team fended out a feisty Kalamazoo attack and scored an opportunistic second half goal to defeat the Hornets 1-0 in the MIAA-opener Monday afternoon at Weaver Field.
Carly Osinski (Carmel, Ind./Guerin Catholic) scored the lone goal of the match in the second half, while Skyler Reed (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) and the rest of the Thunder defense kept a swarming Hornet attack that produced 34 shots off the board. Osinksi's goal was the first goal scored against Kalamazoo this season in four matches. Reed made 13 saves to earn her second-consecutive shutout. The win gives Trine their first 1-0 start ever in MIAA play. The Thunder have opened the season 3-1, the team's best start since the school joined Division III in 2004. Kalamazoo fell to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA.
Reed was solid in net throughout, and especially tough in the early minutes as she made several acrobatic saves to keep the Hornets off the board. Reed made eight saves in the first half, and five in the second. The reigning-MIAA Defensive Player of the Week is now second in the conference with an .871 save percentage.
Osinski became the first opposing player to beat Hornet goalkeeper Lucy Mailing this season at the 56:42 mark of the match. The Thunder defense cleared the ball ahead to freshman Sydney Reichenbaugh (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) for a run up the right side. Reichenbaugh centered the ball and created a rebound, which Osinski punched into the wide-open net for her second goal of the season.
Both of Osinski's goals have been game-winners. Reichenbaugh picked up her first-career assist on the play.
Trine had to withstand five shots and two corner kicks in the final seven minutes of action, but Reed was equal to the task in net and the Thunder defenders cleared away numerous loose-balls in front of the net to preserve the win.
Mailing made two saves for the Hornets. Kalamazoo produced 14 corner kick opportunities to Trine's two.
The Thunder return to action Thursday, Sep. 11 when they travel to Calvin to face the defending-MIAA Champions. The match is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
