ANGOLA, Ind.-- The Trine women's soccer team fell to Saint Mary's, 2-1 in MIAA-action Saturday afternoon at Weaver Field.
The Belles scored the first two goals of the match to build a lead the Thunder couldn't fight back from. Lindsay Rzepecki and Mary Kate McCarthy each scored for Saint Mary's. Skyler Reed (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) tallied Trine's lone goal. Reed moved into sole possession of second place on the school's scoring list in the Division-III era (2004-present) with 12 career goals. The Thunder fell to 1-12-1 overall, 0-11-1 in the MIAA. SMC is 2-11-1 overall, 2-9-1 in conference play.
Rzepecki fought off a defender to win the ball off a service into the box by Lizzie Cusick, which Rezepecki finished high for a 1-0 Belles lead. That goal was the only tally of the first half for either team.
McCarthy pushed the Saint Mary's lead to 2-0 at the 19:23 mark of the second half. McCarthy stole a pass at the top of the box and finished with a shot to low corner.
Reed scored just 4:10 to cut the deficit to one. The senior crashed the net to pick off a loose ball off a rebound for her 12th-career goal and third of the season. Gigi Jarratt (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) picked up the assist.
Rachel McCarthy made four saves in net for SMC. Kristina Veljovic (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) made nine saves for the Thunder.
Trine returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 21 at Albion at 4 p.m.
