GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Trine women's soccer team team dropped a 1-0 match at Calvin in MIAA-action Tuesday evening.
Brianna Russell scored 17:07 into the contest to provide the only goal of the match. Brianna Koehn made five saves to earn the shutout. The Knights outshot the Thunder by a 15-7 margin. Trine fell to 2-7-2 overall, 2-7 in MIAA matches. Calvin improved to 6-6-1 overall, 5-3 in conference play.
Russell's goal came off a cross from Camie Rietberg to the far post. The goal was Russell's seventh of the year.
Trine was able to generate several chances on counters, but Koehn was equal to the task in keeping the Thunder off the board. Morgan Sanderson (Leo, Ind. / Leo) led Trine with three shots on goal and created several quality scoring chances, including a shot that rang off the post in the second half.
Kristina Veljovic (Valparaiso, Ind. / Valparaiso) made seven saves in net for Trine. The junior continues to the MIAA in save percentage.
Trine returns to action Friday, Oct. 7 at Kalamazoo. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
