FREELAND, Mich. – Three student-athletes from the Trine University women's soccer team have been named to the All Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) teams. Teresa Ashbrook [Dewitt, Mich. / Dewitt] was selected as a First Team All-MIAA selection. Sophie Aschemeier [Findlay, Ohio / Liberty-Benton] and Olivia Butterworth [Murray, Ky. / Murray] were each mentioned as Second Team All-MIAA recipients.
The freshman forward Ashbrook had a stellar regular season, with 16 total goals in 13 matches. She broke the records for most goals (16), game-winning goals (6) and points (35) in a single season in NCAA DIII program history. Despite missing five matches, Ashbrook is still 13th in the nation in goals scored and led the conference. Ashbrook scored in the first seven matches of 2021, and tallied all three goals in a 3-2 victory against nationally-ranked at time of play Denison University.
In goal, Aschemeier started the final seven matches of the regular season, including seven of the eight MIAA contests. The freshman was a part of five shutouts, including four solo clean sheets. She helped the Thunder clinch a home playoff match by keeping opponents off the board in the final two conference matches of the regular season. Aschemeier made 35 regular season saves, with a save percentage of .814 and goals allowed average at 0.93. She was fourth in the conference with just eight goals allowed in the 2021 season.
Also a second team honoree, the junior midfielder Butterworth started in all eight conference matches and appeared in all 18 matches for Trine. She netted two goals: one at Hope College, and in the 4-0 victory at Adrian College. In the regular season, Butterworth had two assists, both of which coming on game-winning goals.
In the opening round of the MIAA Tournament this past Saturday both second team selections made a huge impact in the win. Aschemeier held the visiting Bulldogs scoreless to earn another shutout on the season and Butterworth scored the lone goal of the contest in the final minutes of the game to give the team the 1-0 victory.
Trine will travel to face Calvin University tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 2. The semi-final contest is set to start at 7 p.m.
