HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – Senior Andrea Wright of the Trine University women's soccer team has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Women's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week.
It is the third time this season that a Thunder student-athlete has been named to the award. It is the first time in Wright's career that she has been named an athlete of the week.
Trine finished the week 1-0-1 with a pair of crucial results against MIAA opponents, with Wright adding a pair of important goals.
Wright began the week by leading the defense to a commanding 5-0 shutout victory over Alma College. In addition to heading the defensive effort, Wright added the final goal of the contest after heading in a corner kick from sophomore Bell Mabry.
Then on Saturday came up with a come from behind draw with Albion College in a match that could decide who receives the opening round bye in the upcoming MIAA Tournament. The Britons scored the first goal of the contest and looked to be set to win the game. Wright helped lock down the defensive end to keep the game in reach and then teamed up with Mabry for the duo's second goal of the week to secure the tie.
The team moved into sole possession of second position in the league table following the week. They sit at 14 points with a 5-1-1 record in MIAA play and a 10-4-2 overall record.
Trine will secure a first-round bye in the upcoming tournament with a win against Olivet College on Wednesday, October 26. They can also take the second spot with a loss or draw, but would need favorable results in other contests involving Albion and Hope. The game on Wednesday is a home contest and will be played in Zollner Stadium at 6:45 p.m.
