ANGOLA, Ind. – Five different members of the Trine University women's soccer team scored as the team came up with their second Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) victory of the season, defeating visiting Alma College by the score of 5-0.
The Thunder scored their first two goals during the opening 12 minutes of play. The first game in the tenth minute. Abby Robison was able to carry the ball deep into the offensive zone before passing it to the front of the net, where Bella Mabry was able to poke it forward for the goal.
Just two minutes and two seconds later, Olivia Butterworth pinballed her way through the defense to score the second goal of the game.
Later in the half, Butterworth looked like she would add an assist to her total for the night, after she passed the ball to Ashlyn Swartz inside the keeper's area. Swartz ended up working back toward the center of the goal before passing it around a defender to find Taylor Currier with the wide-open net.
Trine took the 3-0 lead into the intermission but added to it quickly in the second half. This time Mabry started the play by firing a shot from just inside the near side of the penalty area. The ball was slightly off target hitting the far post and bouncing back out to Robison who scored with the rebound.
The final goal of the game came after a long pass up the field gave Megan Davis a chance with just one defender to beat. She went around her last resistance and then buried the shot in the back of the net.
Sophie Aschemeier made the start in net for Trine and received the victory after playing into the 55th minute of the contest. Sydney Kalinger finished out the contest. Both keepers finished the game with two saves.
The Thunder improve to 6-6-4 overall and 2-4-0 in MIAA following the victory while the Scots drop to 1-10-1 overall and 1-4-1 in conference play. Trine will defend their home pitch again on Saturday, October 21. That game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and will be played on Shive Field.
