ANGOLA, Ind.-- The Trine women's tennis team was defeated by Alma 5-4 in a tightly-contested match Saturday afternoon at Angola Middle School.
Three singles victories highlighted the performance for the Thunder. Kaitlin Black (Crawfordsville, Ind. / Southmont) earned the toughest victory of the day with a three-set winner. Black dropped the first set before rallying back to even things up with a 6-3 win in set two. The junior closed things out by blanking her opponent 6-0 to get the victory and earn a point for Trine. Black picked up her first MIAA victory with the win.
Madison Hatkevich (Granger, Ind. / Penn) won her match at No. 2 singles. The sophomore fended off a tough test from her opponent 6-4 in the first set before putting away the match 6-0. Hatkevich also notched her first conference win of the season.
Kinnsey Pass (Lafayette, Ind. / Jefferson) earned her team-leading eighth win of the season with her victory in the No. 4 court. Pass controlled her match with 6-3, 6-1 winners. She improved to 8-5 on the year and 2-2 in conference matches.
Pass also had a hand in Trine's doubles victory. Pass and Sloan Davis (Olivet, Mich. / Olivet) won 8-3 in the No. 3 court. Pass and Davis are 3-2 as a pairing and 1-1 in conference matches this year.
The loss dropped Trine to 3-10 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA. Alma improved to 4-9 overall, 1-4 in conference matches.
The Thunder host Olivet Monday, Apr. 18 at 5 p.m. The match will be contested at Fremont High School in Fremont, Ind.
