ANGOLA, Ind.-- The Trine women's track and field team hosted the Jon and Carol Liechty Alumni Invitational Saturday afternoon in Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic Recreation Center.
The event served as an exhibition tune-up for the Thunder as they work there way back into the meat of the indoor season following the holiday break. The team welcomed back several alumni who competed in events throughout the day. The team was also able to thank Jon and Carol Liechty for serving as the sponsors for the event and for traveling to support the meet.
Jensyn Garrow (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) set the stage for a strong winter, winning all three of her events. The freshman won the 60-meter dash, 300-meter dash and 600-meter run. The performances in the 60-meter and 300-meter marked her debuts in those events.
Fellow freshman Lydia Walterhouse (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble) ran a time that would have been a school-record in an official meet in the 60-meter hurdles. Her time of 9.33 seconds was 0.4 seconds faster than her own team-best mark. Walterhouse also finished just behind Garrow in the 60-meter and 300-meter events.
Kelsey Ortiz (Swanton, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) and Lacie Piekarski (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) raced to a virtual tie in the One Mile, finishing less than a second apart. Ortiz and Piekarski also took home the top two spots in the 3000-meter run. Both runners are expected to be strong performers for the Thunder in distance events the rest of the winter.
Jenn Steyer (Fenton, Mich./Lake Fenton) set her eyes on a new personal-best in the weight throw. Steyer helps form a strong one-two punch in throwing events alongside Kara Eck (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb).
Trine returns to official competition next Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational.
