FREELAND, Mich.-- Trine's Kara Eck has been named the MIAA Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this spring, the conference announced Tuesday.
Eck (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) turned in a dominating performance in Saturday's Indiana Division III Championships at DePauw University. The sophomore set a new school record in the shot put with a distance of 46 feet, 8.25 inches to win by six feet. Eck also set a new school record in the hammer throw, throwing a distance of 169 feet, 7 inches. She finished 11 feet ahead of the second-place performer. This is the second time Eck has been named Field Athlete of the Week this season.
Saturday's performance in the shot put is the second-best in NCAA Division III this season. Eck won All-America honors in the shot put during the indoor season, placing fourth in the nation. Her performance thus far in the outdoor campaign has Eck poised to earn a bid to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Waverly, Iowa.
Eck's performance in the hammer throw ranks as the seventh-best in the nation. That performance would be good enough for Eck to earn a nationals bid in a second event. Eck also earned two national championship bids during the indoor campaign this year.
Trine will compete in Grand Valley State University's Al Owens Classic this weekend. Events begin Friday, Apr. 22 at noon.
