FREELAND, Mich.-- Trine's Kara Eck has been named the MIAA Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced this afternoon.
Eck (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) earned the honor for the third time this season with a school-record performance at the Hillsdale GINA Relays. The sophomore unleashed a throw of 179 feet, 1 inch to break her own school record by 10 feet. The performance was good enough for fourth-place in the event as she placed ahead of numerous performers from NCAA Division I and II. The throw is the fourth-best in the event in Division III this year.
In addition to her record-setting performance in the hammer throw, Eck continued to shine in the shot put. Eck placed third in that event with a throw of 45 feet, 8.5 inches to once again finish ahead of numerous performers from higher divisions in the NCAA. Her throw beat the second-best Division III performer in the event by more than 10 feet. Her best throw in the event this year is record second in the nation.
Eck's performances in both events thus far have the sophomore poised for another trip to the national championship meet. Eck is a two-time Indoor All-American, most recently winning All-America honors in the shot put this year. She also competed in the hammer throw at last year's outdoor national meet.
Eck and the rest of the Trine women's track and field team will compete in the MIAA's outdoor championship event known as Field Day later this week. Events begin Thursday, May 5 at 1 p.m. and conclude Thursday, May 6.
