DELAWARE, Ohio-- Kara Eck set new school records in the shot put and hammer throw while competing in the 2016 All-Great Lakes Elite Meet.
Eck (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) further solidified her position as a national contender in both events with her new program-best marks. Eck's throw of 47 feet, 11.75 inches was good enough for the top mark in the shot put at the meet and inched the sophomore closer to the No. 1 national ranking in the event. She trails the nation's top performance by just two inches and is ranked second in the nation in the shot put.
Eck also unleashed a throw of 181 feet, 8 inches in the hammer throw to best her own school record by more than two feet. The performance left Eck ranked seventh in the nation in the event entering the weekend.
Both performances have Eck poised for a trip to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Waverly, Iowa. The field for the national meet will be officially announced Monday. The national meet will be held May 26-28.
In addition to Eck's performances, Jenn Steyer (Fenton, Mich. / Lake Fenton) also competed in the meet. Steyer placed seventh in the hammer throw with a distance of 157 feet, 2 inches. The junior's performance was short of qualifying for the national meet.
Steyer wrapped up the season having set personal-bests in the shot put and hammer throw. Steyer was an All-MIAA performer in the weight throw during the indoor season.
