ANGOLA, Ind. — The Trine volleyball team was edged out at home by Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponent Alma on Tuesday night, 3-0, in Hershey Hall.
The Scots took the first three sets, 25-15, 25-19 and 25-14 to win the match. The Thunder's record goes to 2-10 in MIAA play and 3-22 overall. Alma advances to 6-6 in MIAA play and 11-12 overall.
In the first set, Trine took the quick lead over Alma with a 5-0 run. The Scots battled back to go on a seven point run and take the lead. The Scots were able to hang on to the lead to win the first set.
In set two, Alma took the quick lead and kept it with little runs of four points throughout the set. Trine tried to rally back and got within one point late in the second set, but the Scots were able to go on four point run to secure their lead.
In the third set, Alma came out with authority and went on two runs to put them up 11-3. From that point on, the Scots held the double digit lead for the remainder of the set.
The Thunder's offense was led Janaya Wilder (Decatur, Ind. / Bellmont) with seven kills. Trine's defensive effort was also led by Wilder with 12 digs. Emma Bowman (Corballis, Ore. / Saint Joseph) contributed to the defense with three block assists. Samantha Ihrie (Kendallville, Ind. / East Noble) helped the offense with 12 assists, and Raven Hood (Monroe, Mich. / Airport) had 12 assists.
Dakota Pelach led the Scots offense with 10 kills. Molly Lark led Alma's defense with 15 digs, and Sasha Laykova contributed to the defensive effort with 11 digs. Pelach contributed to the Scots' offense with 16 assists and Maressa Miller with 12 assists.
The Thunder will return to action Friday, Oct. 21, for a MIAA match when it travels to face the Flying Dutch of Hope. Action will start at 6:30 p.m.
