ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine volleyball team lost their home opener to nationally ranked Hope College, by 3-1.
The Thunder came out strong in the match forcing extra points in the first set which would eventually end with the score of 27-25 in favor of the Flying Dutch.
In the second set, Trine would start out by falling behind 7-4. Then senior Samantha Ihrie (Kendallville/East Noble) would step up for her turn to serve and bring the Thunder into a tie at eight. The teams would then trade points until freshman Sarah Toles (Kendallville/East Noble) came up in the rotation and led the team to a 13-11 lead. Trine would not relinguish that lead winning the set 25-19.
The Flying Dutch were galvanized by the defeat and would win the final two sets (25-16, 25-17) to win the match. With the result both teams ended the night with identical 3-2 records.
Freshman Madison Munger (Indianapolis/Franklin Central) led the team in kills (14), in addition to achieving a .324 attack percentage. Junior Raven Hood (Monroe, Mich./Airport) led the team in assists with 18, while Ihrie was second with 10.
The Thunder will look to bounce back from the loss on Friday, September 8, at 6:30 p.m. when they travel to Albion, Mich. to take on the Britons in the second conference match of the season.
