ALBION, Mich. – The Trine University women's volleyball came back from a two-set deficit but were just short of forcing a fifth set as they fell to Albion College by the score of 3-1 in the first round of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament.
The Britons came out firing on all cylinders and made quick work of the first two sets winning the first 25-11 and the second 25-15.
In the third, the Thunder struck back, scoring the first four points of the set to take the early 4-0 lead. They held the lead until Albion came back to force the tie at 20. Trine took the lead again at 23-21, but the Britons forced extra points. The Thunder finally took the set with the score of 26-24.
In the fourth set Trine once again built an early lead, this time leading by as much as seven points. But Albion once again tied the game at 20 and again the teams needed extra points for a decision. This time the Britons scored three straight points to take the set 26-24 and the match 3-1.
Senior Shannon Scott (Vicksburg, Mich. / Vicksburg) led the Thunder offensively finishing the match with 10 kills and a .308 hitting percentage. Junior Molly Smith (Angola / Angola) came in second with nine kills and also led Trine's blocking attempt with three total blocks.
Sophomore Jacqueline Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lutheran Northwest) led the team with 16 assists while senior Raven Hood (Monroe, Mich. / Airport) came in second with 14. Defensively sophomore Lindsey DeCamp (New Haven / New Haven) led the team with 34 assists in the match.
With the loss, the Thunder are eliminated from MIAA Tournament competition. They finish the season with an 11-12 overall record.
