ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's volleyball team dropped a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) match to the number eight ranked team in the nation in Calvin University. The Knights topped the Thunder in straight sets on their home floor Tuesday evening.
The loss makes Trine 8-8 in 2022 and 1-3 in league play. Calvin remains unbeaten against MIAA opponents at 3-0 and 11-3 overall.
Cassidy Victor and Olivia Jolliffe sparked the offense with one kill apiece to start the match, but from there, the Knights would dominate the first set. The visitors took a 13-5 lead before the Thunder called for time. Victor added another pair of kills late in the set, but it was not enough to slow a potent Calvin offense in a 25-10 set loss for Trine.
Jolliffe and Meara Finnegan recorded a massive block at the net at the beginning of set number two and Madison Dominick was able to get in the scoring column early as well, but once more the Knights took an early advantage at 15-6. Anna Loughrey, Francesca Queary, Catherine Dobies and Kacie Van Kalker added points for the Thunder in the 25-13 set two defeat.
Queary was the catalyst for offense in the third set with a pair of kills, but a 9-4 deficit downed the team early on. Mid-set adjustments helped the cause, including points by Maya Toma and Rachel Campbell that led to the team getting to within six at 20-14. From there, Calvin would add on five in a row to put an abrupt end to the match at 25-14.
Individual stat leaders included Victor with six kills, Kailee Cornell with 12 assists, and Van Kalker with eight digs.
On Wednesday, October 5, women's volleyball will play host to the Spalding University Golden Eagles in the team's annual pink out match. First serve is slated for 7 pm.
