Trine University alumnus Joe Schroeder got on the board for men's USA rugby 7s at the Tokyo Olympics, getting the opening score in the team's final pool play match against South Africa.
Schroeder's effort at 1:51 put the USA up 5-0, before South Africa tied the match at 5-5 later in the first half. South Africa went on to win 17-12, but both teams advanced to the quarterfinal round.
The USA got off to a 21-0 lead in its quarterfinal against Great Britain before that country scored 26 unanswered points to win 26-21. Schroeder did not score in that match. The loss knocked the USA out of medal contention.
The USA will face Canada in the consolation round beginning at 9 p.m. EDT today (Tuesday). NBC will provide coverage of the match.
Regardless of the outcome, the USA will improve on its ninth-place finish at the Rio Olympics in 2016. The winner of the USA-Canada match will play for fifth place; the loser will play for seventh.
