MARS HILL, N.C. -- The Trine University acrobatics and tumbling team competed for the second time in two days and picked up their first win of the season defeating their hosts from Mars Hill University by the score of 211.095 to 202.285.
Despite the successful end of the day, the Thunder struggled a bit during the Compulsory event. They would post two strong scores in the second (8.70) and third (8.40) heats, but posted low scores in the first and fourth and would trail 29.10 to 25.70 after the event.
The Thunder would erase that deficit and take the lead following the Acro event. They would outscore the opposition in all three heats posting a 7.90, 7.70 and 8.20 respectively. Total in the event they would score 23.80 to the Lions' 18.45.
Trine would build on their lead in the Pyramid event, posting their first above nine scores of the night. They would post a 9.15 in the first heat and a 9.10 in the third heat. They won each individual heat on the way to a 26.90 to 24.70 win, taking a 76.40 to 72.25 lead into halftime.
The Toss event would be the tightest of the day with the Thunder outscoring the opposition by just .45 of a point, 22.95 to 22.50. Their best score came in the first heat where they posted an 8.10.
Mars Hill would take the Tumbling event to cut into Trine's lead. The Thunder's best score came in the open pass where they posted a 7.975. Total for the event the team posted a 38.175 to make the match score 137.525 to 135.625 heading into the Team event.
Trine would secure the victory scoring a 73.57 in the Team event compared to the Lions' 66.66.
The team improves to 1-3 following their first victory of the season. They will to the mats when they host Kutztown University on Saturday, March 19 for a 1 p.m. match.
