ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University acrobatics and tumbling team secured the program's first win over Concordia University Wisconsin while racking up new scoring records in multiple places. The team won by the final score of 243.070 to 236.245, a new best total score for the Thunder.
The match began with the Compulsory Event where the home team earned the slightest of leads following the three hits with a score of 29.65 to 29.50. The Thunder had strong scores in two of four heats including a new best in the pyramid heat where they posted a 9.85 and a 9.00 in the toss heat.
The Acro Event saw the team build on that lead by outscoring the Falcons 25.65 to 23.95. Trine won all three heats in the event with their best score coming the third heat where they posted a 9.10 which is tied fore second best in program history.
They continued to build on their lead by winning the Pyramid Event by the score of 28.25 to 27.20. The event score ties the program record as the team posted three above nine scores to manage the feat. They posted a 9.35 in the first heat, before posting the second-best score in program history in the second heat with a 9.20. They finished off with a new program best in the third heat with a 9.70.
All told the Thunder held a three-point lead at the halfway point of the match. The score was 83.55 to 80.65 at the intermission.
The Falcons cut into that deficit during the Toss Event, outscoring Trine 27.20 to 24.45. The home team still turned in solid performances with solid scores in the second and third heat. In the synchronized heat the Thunder posted a score of 8.00, before making a new program record in the open heat with an 8.75.
Trine saved some of their best work for the Tumbling Event, where they posted a new program best score of 45.95. They also outscored Concordia University to build back on their lead. The Thunder posted new program bests in the three of the heats, including the third heat with a 7.80, the fifth heat with an 8.30 and the sixth heat with an 8.95.
With the match still very close, the Team Event would decide the winner. Trine turned in their best performance of the night posted a new program record 89.12 in the final event. They outscored the Falcons by just under six points to secure the win.
Trine improves to 2-1 following the victory. They will continue their season by hosting the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday, March 16. The contest is set to be played inside Hershey Hall and will begin at 6 p.m.
