ALBION, Mich. – The Trine University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to Albion College. The Thunder were defeated 10-0 in the opening game of the day and dropped game two by a score of 7-1.
GAME ONE RECAP:
In game one, three runs in the bottom of the first put the team at an early deficit. Brody Bond had the team' first hit in the second, but an unlucky double play thwarted the scoring effort. A sacrifice fly for the Britons made it 4-0.
Nathan Gilmet led off the third with a double and a bunt moved him 90 feet from home, but he was left stranded. Dalton Nikirk and Joel Walton suffered the same fate in the next inning after reaching base. A three-run homerun in the sixth and three runs on three hits in the seventh made it a 10-0 game.
Starting pitcher Cam Nagel (2-3) struck out three over the course of five innings. Gilmet added another double later in the game to give him a team-high four total bases in the loss.
GAME TWO RECAP:
Trine was on the board first in the second game of the day after Joel Walton brought in Luke Burford with an RBI single. The lead would not last long however as Albion rallied for six in the bottom half of the inning.
The bullpen would rally for the remainder of the game with Reid Courtwright twirling 2.2 innings. Kade Keele and Cole Decker would throw two innings of scoreless relief work as well. The trio combined for eight K's.
The Thunder trailed 7-1 heading into the ninth and attempted to mount a late comeback. An error, followed by a walk from Tyler Beyke and a single by Burford loaded the bases, but the third out was recorded before a run came across to score.
Burford had three of the team's four total hits in the second game, all of them singles. Walton reached base twice with a single and walk. Will Gimbel (0-3) was charged the loss.
