DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Trine University men’s golf team finished third at the Defiance Spring Invitational on Saturday, April 7, shooting a combined 313 for the day.
The Thunder finished just four strokes out of first as Owens Community College won the event with a 309, while Division II Tiffin University finished second one stroke ahead of Trine. Host Defiance rounded out the team results in fourth with a team score of 322. Justin Epure of Tiffin took home the medalist honors, shooting a 1-over-par 72.
The tournament was played at a par-71 course, as junior Pat Wolcott (Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) led the way for the team finished third shooting a 5-over-par 76. Finishing in a tie for sixth was senior Max Niehans (Nashville, Ind./Brown County) who finished one stroke behind with a 77. Sophomore Graham Bennett (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) finished just behind the leaders shooting a 78 to tie for 10th. Rounding out the team scoring in a tie for 18th was the senior tandem of Matt Warrener (Kendalville, Ind./East Noble) and Todd Wisler (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) shooting rounds of 82.
On the individual side for the Thunder, junior Brett Powers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) led the way finishing with a round of 77. Rounding out the scores for Trine were juniors Chase Garver (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) with a round of 87 and Jake Wells (Montpelier, Ohio/Edon) carding a 91.
Trine will host the A.C. Eddy Tournament beginning at 1:00 p.m. on April 10.
