BATTLE CREEK, MICH. -- After an impressive team performance in 2019-20 that included its first conference championship, the Trine University men's golf team started of its 2020-21 schedule right where it left off with a victory at the Lou Collins Memorial Tournament hosted by Olivet (Mich.) College at Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek, Mich.
The Thunder finished three strokes ahead of fellow Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponent, Calvin (Mich.) College, with an overall total of 291 strokes. Calvin finsihed with 294 strokes to take second place and Adrian (Mich.) College was third at 302 strokes.
Individually, three Trine players finished in the top five, including another player who finished in the top 10. Sophomore Mitch Lowney (Fenton, Mich./Clarkston Everest) placed second overall with a score of 70 strokes. Freshman Mark Civanich was second after firing a round of 72 strokes and finished in third place. Fellow freshman Jack Brockie had the third lowest total for the team of 73 strokes which was put him in a tie for fourth place and senior Carlos Coeto (Bernardo, Mexico) carded a round of 76 strokes and tied for eighth among the field. All four players were named to the All-Tournament Team as the top five overall scores were recognized for the honor.
Rounding out the five team eligible scores was turned in by senior Cameron Ruge (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) who posted a score of 81 strokes and was tied for 18th.
In addition, the Thunder had a host of players compete as individuals which included five players who placed in the top-20. Senior Todd Mieske (Owosso, Mich./Owosso) finished in a tie for fourth place overall with a round of 73 strokes. Junior Jeffrey Uhls (Shelbyville, Ind./Shelbyville) shot a round of 78 strokes (t-14th), freshman Jordan Brandman ended the day with a score of 78 strokes (t-18th) and the duo of Jacob Roeder and junior Justin Glesner (Shelbyville, Ind./Shelbyville) both carded rounds of 82 strokes (t-20th).
Also competing were sophomore Mitch Blank who shot a round of 84 strokes (25th) and senior Zach Frane (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) had a score of 91 strokes (29th).
Up next for Trine will be back-to-back single-round events hosted by Adrian (Mich.) College beginning on Friday, Sept. 18 at The Grande Golf Course in Jackson, Mich. The round is set to begin at noon.
