BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The Trine University men's golf team hit the links for the first time this season in the Olivet Lou Collins Invite at Bedford Valley Golf Course. After day one of competition, the Thunder sit fourth in a loaded field of 14 teams.
The Trine men shot a 302 in the first, just three strokes off the leaders, Siena Heights.
Competing in his first collegiate tournament, freshman Brogan Brockie [Jackson, Mich. / Hanover Horton] fired a first round 74 and is tied for sixth place. An eagle on hole 4 was the highlight for Brockie on the day. He went four strokes under par on the four par-5 holes, tied for the clubhouse low.
His cousin Jack Brockie [Jackson, Mich. / Hanover Horton] finished just one stroke behind with a 75 on Friday and enters play Saturday in 14th. Brockie bookended his front nine with birdies on par-4's and was just 1-over on the back.
Mark Civanich [Valparaiso, Ind. / Valparaiso] notched a 76 in his first 18 holes of the 2021 fall campaign. Civanich overcame a difficult first few holes and went nine holes bogey-free from the 6th to the 15th.
Junior Mitch Lowney [Fenton, Mich. / Clarkston Everest] scored a 77 at Bedford Valley, going even on the front. His lone birdie on the day came on the par-5 7th hole.
The fifth scoring member competing for Trine was freshman Colin Crumrine [Newark, Ohio / Newark Catholic], who wrapped up play with an 81. The longer holes were good to Crumrine – he had three birdies on the day that all came on par-5's.
The Thunder brought one individual to compete: junior Nick Phillips [Yorktown, Ind. / Mincie Central]. Phillips shot an 83 on Friday afternoon.
Play at the Olivet Lou Collins Invite concludes on Saturday with 18 more holes.
