ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine University men's lacrosse team started the 2021 season with an 11-10 loss in a hard-fought game against Adrian (Mich.) College in non-conference action at Zollner Athletic Stadium in Angola, Ind.
Senior Tyler Corless (St. Clair Shores, Mich./De La Salle) and sophomore Andrew Douglas (Liberty Twp., Ohio/Lakota East) both ended the afternoon with a team-high five points with Corless scoring a game-tying high four goals to go along with an assist, and Douglas found the back of the net twice and assisted on a game-tying high three goals.
Junior Austin Lindell (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) scored a pair of goals and added an assist for three points and senior Jarod Schepp (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) tallied both a goal and an assist for two points. The duo of seniors Matt Zanichelli (Rolling Meadows, Ill./William Fremd) and Brandon Matuszczak (Hoffman Estates, Ill./William Fremd) rounded out the point scorers with a point each. Zanichelli recorded a goal scored and Matuszczak had an assist.
Sophomore John Konicek (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) had a game-high 10 ground balls and was 12-of-22 on faceoffs (54.5 percent). Senior Keith McCowan (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) was second in ground balls with nine.
Freshman Nick DiPaolo (Flemington, N.J./Immaculate) played the majority of the game in net in his first collegiate action and made 11 saves in 55:16. Senior Anthony Marasco (Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley) played the final 4:44 and had one save.
Adrian (1-1) scored the first goal of the game on a man-up opportunity at the 12:51 mark of the first quarter. Trine (0-1) answered just over a minute later when Corless netted his first goal of the game, with a helper from Lindell, to even the game at 1-1. The Thunder then scored back-to-back goals to grab a 3-1 advantage when Corless scored his second marker of the period which was followed by a score from Douglas. The Bulldogs tacked on a goal under the five-minute mark to pull to within a point, 3-2, but was later answered by Trine when Zanichelli put a shot past the Adrian goalkeeper with 2:07 to go in the quarter to put Trine back out in front by a pair of goals, 4-2, after the first 15 minutes.
The second quarter saw Adrian outscore Trine, 5-1, but the period began with Schepp adding another goal for Trine 57 seconds in to give the Thunder a three-point margin, 5-2. The Bulldogs then scored five unanswered goals with the last one coming with 25 seconds to go in the half to take the lead and go into the locker rooms with a score of 7-5.
Trine cut the deficit in half early in the third quarter when Corless scored his third marker of the contest and made it a 7-6 ball game. Adrian then tallied consecutive goals at the 8:27 and 4:10 minute marks to go up by three scores, 9-6. Neither team scored in the final 4:10 keeping the Adrian lead at three goals heading into the final frame.
The two teams combined for six goals in the fourth quarter starting with a man-up goal by Adrian that gave the Bulldogs a four-goal advantage, 10-6. Lindell then found the back of the net about two minutes later to help Trine capitalize on a man-up advantage of its own with 12:50 to go in regulation to narrow the gap to 10-7. Adrian quickly regained a four-goal edge with its fourth extra-man score of the contest at the 11:31 mark to make the score 11-7. Trine began to work its way back into the game with a pair of goals in the span of 12 seconds with goals by Corless and Douglas that cut the deficit to 11-9. With under a minute to go, the Thunder got on the board again when Lindell put a shot past the Adrian netminder to make it an 11-10 game. But time was not on Trine's side as the Thunder couldn't get the game-tying goal it needed before the end of regulation, allowing Adrian to come away with the 11-10 victory.
Trine is scheduled to play its next two games on the road starting with a matchup against Kalamazoo (Mich.) College on Friday, Mar. 12 in Kalamazoo, Mich. The game is set for a 7 p.m. start.
