Trine Men's Lacrosse Falls to Hope, 13-6

Trine Men's Lacrosse Falls to Hope, 13-6

HOLLAND, MICH.  --  The Trine University men's lacrosse team took on Hope (Mich.) College in a non-conference game at Smith Stadium in Holland, Mich., but fell to the Flying Dutchmen by the final score of 13-6.

The two teams went the majority of the first quarter without a score until the 6:47 mark when Hope (6-0) scored a pair of goals in the span of about 30 seconds to lead, 2-0.  Nearing the end of the period, Trine (2-3) got on the board during a man-up advantage when junior Austin Lindell (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) found the back of the net with an assist from sophomore Andrew Douglas (Liberty Twp., Ohio/Lakota East) and narrowed the gap to 2-1 after the first 15 minutes.

The Dutchmen added another goal three minutes in to the second quarter, but the Thunder quickly responded with a goal of its own at the 11:44 mark by Douglas to make it a one-goal game again, 3-2.  Hope then put a little distance between itself and Trine with two more goals at the 8:15 and 6:52 marks that made the score, 5-2.  Senior Tyler Corless (St Clair Shores, Mich./De La Salle) put another score on the board for Trine with 5:33 to go in the half, but Hope tacked on a pair of additional scores in the final minute-and-a-half to grab a 7-3 advantage at halftime.

Trine started off the scoring in the third period with a marker from senior Dave Keptner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow) at the 13:04 mark.  The two squads then exchanged goals just past the midway point of the quarter with Trine's goal coming off the stick of senior Brandon Matuszczak (Hoffman Estates, Ill./William Fremd), but Hope maintained a three-goal margin, 8-5.  The Dutchmen added two more scores before the end of the frame with three minutes and 12 seconds left to end the scoring and lead, 10-5, heading into the fourth quarter.

Hope scored the first goal of the final period at the 8:33 mark and then added another with just over five minutes to go to increase the margin to seven goals, 12-5.  Lindell later tallied what turned out to be the final goal for the Thunder on another man-up advantage with a little over three minutes to go in the game that made the score 12-6.  Less than a minute later, the Dutchmen scored the final goal of the game en route to the 13-6 final.

Lindell finished as the lone multi-goal scorer for Trine to finish with a team-tying high two points.  Corless finished with a goal and an assist to also finish with two points on the afternoon.  In addition to Douglas and Corless, senior Matt Zanichelli (Rolling Meadows, Ill./William Fremd) and sophomore Zach Anderson (Crestwood, Ill./Oak Forest) each recorded an assist to round out the point scorers.

Senior Anthony Marasco (Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley) played all 60 minutes at goalkeeper for the Thunder and recorded 10 saves in 23 shots faced.

Trine will next turn its attention to Albion (Mich.) College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association matchup on Saturday, Apr. 3 in Albion, Mich.  The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
