Thunder Get Back to Winning Ways Against Bulldogs, 14-10

Thunder Get Back to Winning Ways Against Bulldogs, 14-10

ADRIAN, MICH.  --  The Trine University men's lacrosse team ended a three-game winless skid with a 14-10 victory against Adrian (Mich.) College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association game at Docking Stadium in Adrian, Mich.

Sophomore Noah Markus (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) led all players in scoring with a game-tying high four goals and a pair of assists.  Senior Matt Zanichelli (Rolling Meadows, Ill./William Fremd) was second in scoring with a game-tying high three assists to go along with two goals.  Senior Tyler Corless (St Clair Shores, Mich./De La Salle) also scored three assists in addition to a goal for four total points on the night.

Junior Austin Lindell (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) along with seniors Jarod Schepp (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) and Dave Keptner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow) rounded out the multi-goal scorers with two goals each.  Additionally, freshman Klein Burkholder (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) got his name in the scoresheet with a goal scored and freshman Collin Custer (Spanaway, Wash./Bethel) ended the game with a point thanks to an assist.

Senior goalkeeper Anthony Marasco (Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley) played the majority of the game in net for Trine and made 12 saves on 21 shots faced.  Freshman Nick DiPaolo (Flemington, N.J./Immaculate) saw a minutes worth of action and finished with no saves on one shot faced.

Adrian (4-6, 0-2 MIAA) scored the game's first goal in the first quarter, but Trine (3-4, 2-1 MIAA) then struck for three straight scores by Markus, Keptner and Burkholder as the Thunder led, 3-1, after the first 15 minutes.  The second period saw both offenses tally five goals which came at a back-and-forth pace throughout the period.  Lindell scored Trine's first goal of the frame at the 13:37 mark that made it a 4-2 game.  Following a pair of goals by the Bulldogs, Zanichelli and Keptner tallied back-to-back scores for the Thunder to regain a two-goal edge, 6-4, with a little under nine minutes to go in the half.

Adrian then captialized on consecutive man-up advantages to even the contest at 6-6, before Markus and Corless capped the scoring with goals at the 2:25 and 1:07 marks and put Trine out in front by a score of 8-6 at the intermission.

The two teams traded goals early to start the third quarter that included another score by Markus at the 12:01 mark.  The Bulldogs found the back of the net a couple of minutes after the Markus goal to pull to within a point when Trine ended the period with three straight scores to put some distance between itself and its opponents on the scoreboard.  Markus recorded his fourth goal of the night during the run which also included scores from Schepp and Lindell as the visitors led, 12-8, going into the final period.

Seven minutes into the fourth quarter, Adrian crept to within three points with a goal to start the scoring, but the Thunder answered with consecutive goals by Zanichelli and Schepp with 5:30 and 3:37 left to play to put Trine out ahead by a more comfortable, 14-9, margin.  The final goal of the game came at the 1:25 mark when the Bulldogs got a final shot to the back of the net, but were held scoreless after that as Trine went on to the 14-10 final.

Trine will host Kalamazoo (Mich.) College on Saturday, Apr. 10 in a conference game at Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium.  The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
