ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine University men's lacrosse team was defeated by Hope (Mich.) College, 13-5, in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association and regular-season home finale at Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium on senior day.
Hope (9-1, 3-1) jumped out early and scored the first 10 goals of the game, including seven in the first quarter to lead, 7-0, after the first 15 minutes. The Flying Dutchmen added three goals to start the second quarter before Trine (4-6, 3-3 MIAA) got on the scoreboard with 4:31 left to play in the half when freshman Klein Burkholder (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) scored on a man-advantage to make it a 10-1 game. The Thunder added a little more momentum to end the half when senior Tyler Corless (St Clair Shores, Mich./De La Salle) added another score for Trine with 13 seconds to go to narrow the gap to 10-2 at the break.
The two teams traded goals in the third quarter with Trine's goal coming off the stick of sophomore Noah Markus (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) with 11 seconds on the clock to set up a fourth quarter with Trine trailing, 11-3.
Both squads went back-and-forth in the final period with both teams scoring a pair of goals. Hope struck first at the 6:59 mark, but junior Matt Zanichelli (Rolling Meadows, Ill./William Fremd) answered for Trine with a goal about a minute-and-a-half later to pull the Thunder back to within eight points, 12-4. The Dutchmen tacked on a final goal with just under five minutes to go to make the score 13-4. Trine scored the final goal of the game at 1:12 on clock when senior Jarod Schepp (Oconomowoc, Wisc./Kettle Moraine) found the back of the net, but time was not on the Thunder's side as Hope came away with the 13-5 final.
Markus ended the day with a pair of points to lead Trine in scoring thanks to his goal, but he also recorded an assist on Burkholder's goal. Burkholder, Corless, Zanichelli and Schepp each finished with a point thanks to their individual goals. Sophomore Andrew Douglas (Liberty Twp., Ohio/Lakota East) rounded out the point scorers with an assist.
In net, senior Anthony Marasco (Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley) started at goalkeeper and had no saves in six minutes of playing time. Freshman Nick DiPaolo (Flemington, N.J./Immaculate) finished the game and tallied 13 saves in 54 minutes.
Trine will wait and see what seed it will have for the MIAA Tournament that begins next Saturday, May 1. Opponent, site and start time for the first game is yet to be determined.
