MONMOUTH, Ill. -- The Trine University men's lacrosse team turned in a second strong performance of the season defeating their hosts from Monmouth (Ill.) College by the score of 13-5.
The game started as a close one with the team's trading goals in the first period. The Fighting Scots would score first with just over ten minutes remaining in the opener. The Thunder responded at the nine-minute mark when junior Andrew Douglas (Liberty Twp., Ohio / Lakota East) and sophomore Klein Burkholder (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) combined for the goal.
Monmouth retook their lead with seven minutes remaining before Trine tied the game again at the four-minute mark on a goal by sophomore Collin Custer (Spanaway, Wash. / Bethel). The teams would hit the first break with the score tied at two.
The Scots took their final lead of the contest in the opening minutes of the second with a goal making the score 3-2. From that point on the Thunder would dominate the contest offensively. They finished the half on a 7-1 run, entering the intermission leading 9-4. The second half saw the team score four goals to the home squad's one to finish the game with the 13-5 victory.
Douglas once again paced the team finishing with seven points including five goals and two assists. Senior matt Zanichelli (Rolling Meadows, Ill. / William Fremd) came in second with five points including four goals and an assist.
Junior Jack Konicek (Geneva, Ill. / Geneva) was a menace in the faceoff circle winning 16 of 21 chances. He led the team with seven ground balls while also adding a goal and an assist in the game.
Senior Dave Keptner was a force for the defense forcing four turnovers and recovering four groundballs.
The Thunder improve to 2-0 following the victory. They will travel to face Taylor (Ind.) University for their next contest. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 10.
