ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team was outmatched by Hope College in their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) contest, falling by the score of 20-5.
The Flying Dutch would score the first five goals of the contest and would never look back leading the contest from the third minute onward.
Freshman Charlie Anderson (Howell, Mich. / Hartland) would finally get the Thunder on the board with just over three minutes remaining in the first period. The goal was aided by a penalty called on the opposition and from junior Andrew Douglas (Liberty Twp., Ohio / Lakota East) who set up the goal with a great pass from behind the net.
Hope would score throughout the second period building their lead to 10-1, before Trine was able to score a goal of their own in the waning seconds of the period to head to half down 10-2. The goal came in transition with junior Eli Pfotenhauer (Greenwood, Ind. / Center Grove) throwing the ball up the field to Douglas who was able to finish off the play with the goal.
The team looked to rally out of the intermission but were unable to change the flow of the game. The Flying Dutch would score two goals in the first two minutes of the third before the Thunder scored their first of the half. Trine's goal came from junior Caleb Brickley (Grand Ledge, Mich. / Grand Ledge) with 13:29 remaining in the period. Douglas once again added an assist on the goal.
After two more goals from Hope, senior Austin Lindell (Geneva, Ill. / Geneva) would find the back of the net with an assist from freshman Patrick Doyle (Fishers, Ind. / Cathedral) to make the score 14-4. Unfortunately Hope would score three more before the end of the quarter and would take a 17-4 lead into the final intermission.
After the Flying Dutch scored three more to get to 20 on the game, the final goal would go to Doyle with just over four minutes remaining in the game putting the score at 20-5.
The Thunder fall to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play following the loss. They will look to bounce back when they travel to face Albion College on Wednesday, April 20 for another MIAA contest. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
