ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team won another lopsided game, their fourth win by ten or more goals so far this season. They finished today with a 19-3 victory over visiting Cornell (Iowa) College.
The Thunder scored their first goal of the game just 34 seconds after the opening faceoff. Junior Collin Custer scored the goal unassisted, the first of his team-high four goals. Freshman Peter Piccillo would score the second goal of the game just over 90 seconds later, before Custer scored his second.
All told the team scored eight goals in the first quarter. Custer finished with three while four other members of the team joined Piccillo with one apiece. Senior Andrew Douglas scored his first goal of the day while classmates Eli Pfotenhauer and Jack Konicek joined freshman Teague Stephens with scoring their lone goals of the game.
The offense slowed slightly in the second with the Thunder scoring just four to build their lead to 12-0 at halftime. Sophomore Charlie Anderson scored first in the period, followed by Piccillo and Douglas before freshman Jackson Bell tallied the final goal of the half with just five seconds left.
The team added five more unanswered goals in the third period to build their lead to 17-0. Custer posted his fourth to start the half with Douglas scoring his third and then assisting on two more. Douglas finished the game with three goals and four assists to lead the team with seven points.
Anderson scored his second of the day with junior Aiden Theobald and freshman Brendan Dale finishing off the third period scoring.
Sophomore Patrick Doyle and freshman Brendan Smurdon each scored a goal in the fourth to give the team their 18th and 19th goals. The Rams finally got on the board in the fourth with three goals of their own to put the final score at its final of 19-3.
Junior Nick DiPaolo played the first half of the game and recorded the victory for the Thunder in goal. He finished the game with five saves. Freshman Zade Gawrys then played the third period and recorded three more saves for the team. A platoon finished off the fourth quarter and would allow the goals.
In addition to his impressive goal, Konicek went 14-for-17 in the faceoff circle to lead the team.
Trine improves to 5-0 overall following the win. The streak marks the second-best start to a season in program history, needing one more win to tie the record. They will look for that win on Saturday, March 18 when they host Carroll (Wis.) University for a 3 p.m. contest.
