ADRIAN, Mich. – Sophomore Charlie Anderson accounted for all but one of the Trine University men's lacrosse team's goals as they fell to Adrian College in the penultimate game of the 2023 season.
The Bulldogs put the first goal on the board, scoring in the first minute of play. Anderson responded as the clock ticked below 12 minutes for the first quarter. The 1-1 tie was short lived with the home team going on a three-goal run over the remainder of the period to take a 4-1 lead into the first break.
Neither team scored for the first seven minutes of the second quarter, but Adrian struck first again building the lead to 5-1. Freshman Peter Piccillo tallied Trine's lone goal of the period with senior Andrew Douglas adding an assist. The Bulldogs scored in the waning seconds of the half to take a 6-2 lead into halftime.
Adrian pulled away in the third period, outscoring the Thunder 6-1 in the period. Anderson scored his second goal of the game in the period with Piccillo adding an assist.
Trine won the third period outscoring the home side 2-1 in the period. Senior Collin Custer scored the first for the team with Anderson assisting. Anderson then scored the final goal of the game with just over two minutes remaining pulling the team within eight and making the final score of 13-5 in favor of Adrian.
Senior Jack Konicek led the team in groundballs with eight and with ten wins in the faceoff circle. He won just under 50 percent of the faceoffs in the game. Freshman Danny Kelly led the team with three caused turnovers, with classmate Cam Modreski and Douglas each finishing second with two.
In net, junior Nick DiPaolo finished all 60 minutes of the game and recorded 15 saves despite allowing the 13 goals and recording the loss.
The Thunder fall to 9-4 overall and 1-4 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play. This loss eliminates the team from postseason contention with any tiebreakers favoring Calvin University and Kalamazoo College, the two team's Trine could tie in the standings. The team will finish their season when they host Kalamazoo College on Saturday, April 26. The game is set to start at 1 p.m.
