ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's soccer team defeated DePauw University on Tuesday night in the home opener 5-0. Colin Nicoski [Plainfield, Ill. / Plainfield East] scored two goals on the night while the backline kept a clean sheet in the match.
The Thunder get above the .500 mark at 4-3 on the season, while DePauw falls 6-3.
In just the seventh minute, Trine was on the board with a Nicoski goal off the feed from Connor Malmquist [Valparaiso, Ind. / Morgan Township].
Once again in the 18th minute, Tyler Murphy [Greenfield, Ind. / Greenfield Central] was able to find the back of the net after he beat his defender one-on-one. Murphy leads the team with his sixth goal of the 2021 season.
The Thunder took a 2-0 lead into halftime while holding the Tigers to just one shot offensively. That shot came with less than two minutes to go before the end of the half with Troy Saylor [Caledonia, Mich. / Caledonia] making a diving save in net.
Nicoski converted a second opportunity in the 57th minute when he accepted a corner kick in the box and punched it home to make it 3-0.
Trine tacked on a pair of goals in the 85th and 86th minutes to secure the victory. Jacob Fivecoate [Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead] netted his first career goal with Francesco Mazzei [Dearborn, Mich. / Dearborn] finding him for his second assist of the season. Moments later, he struck for a goal in tandem offense with Alhusain Yahya [Melvindale, Mich. / Melvindale].
Saylor tallied three total saves in the win.
The next game for the Thunder men's soccer team is Saturday, September 25 when Trine travels to Anderson for a 4 pm non-conference kick-off.
