ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's tennis team hosted Anderson (Ind.) University for their first home contest of the season, defending the Ryan Tennis Center courts masterfully and picking up an 8-1 victory.
The Thunder got off to a terrific start winning all three of the doubles matches in the dual. Sophomore Cole Goodman and senior Drew Dixon took the No. 1 match 8-4 in what would be the closest of the three doubles contests. Senior Aaron Streit and junior Ryan Smith won the No. 2 match 8-3 while sophomore Caleb Morris and freshman Elijah Schilthuis took the No. 3 match 8-2.
The team went on to drop just one of singles matches to finish off the 8-1 win. Smith recorded the most convincing win in No. 6 singles with scores of 6-0, 6-1. Morris won the No. 5 match 6-0, 6-3 while Streit needed just one more set to win 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 3 match. Schilthuis came up with a 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 2 match and Goodman won the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-3 to finish off the night.
Trine improves to 4-0 following the victory. They will next take the courts when members of the team travel to the ITA Regional Championships in St. Louis, Mo. The three-day event begins on Thursday, Sept. 22.
