ORLANDO, Fla. – The Trine University men's tennis team competed in a pair of dual matches as they continued their spring break trip in Florida.
The Thunder began the day with a sweep of St. John Fishers University, winning all nine matches to take the dual. Cole Goodman and Drew Dixon posted a shutout win of their own in the No. 2 doubles match, winning 8-0. Caleb Morris and Nicholas Jen needed just a bit longer with an 8-1 victory in the No. 3 match. Sammy Yin and Andrew Spirrison finished the No. 1 match with an 8-2 win.
Dixon needed a tiebreaker in the closest match of the day ultimately winning at No. 5 singles with scores of 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). On the other end of the spectrum, Morris won the No. 4 match in straight points, 6-0, 6-0. Spirrison and Jen dropped just one point each with 6-0, 6-1 wins in the No. 3 and No. 6 matches respectively.
In the second dual of the day the Thunder faced off with Wabash College. The two teams began with the singles matches, splitting the points for a 3-3 score. Yin won at No. 1 with scores of 6-3, 6-1 in the only lopsided victory for the team. At No. 6, Dixon won but needed a tiebreaker in the second set for final scores of 6-1, 7-6. Goodman posted the final win for the team but had to come from behind to do so. The final of the No. 2 match was 1-6, 6-3, 10-8.
The teams were unable to complete their doubles matches, with the facility closing at 10 p.m. Trine had a lead in No. 3 match while trailing in the No. 2 match. No. 1 was a virtual tie. The dual goes down as a no-contest with neither team reaching five points to secure a win.
The Thunder end the day 5-3 overall. They will finish their trip with a single match against Wittenberg University tomorrow, Thursday, March 7. That dual is set to begin at 11 a.m.
