GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Trine University men's tennis team bowed out of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) tournament after a close loss to their hosts from Calvin University with a score of 5-2.
The Thunder took two of the three doubles matches in the contest, but a hard-fought loss turned out to be a major factor in the dual. Sammy Yin and Andrew Spirrison in the No. 1 match and Nicholas Jen and Caleb Morris in the No. 3 match all won by the score of 8-6. The team of Cole Goodman and Drew Dixon ended up in a tiebreaker for the No. 2 match, eventually losing 8-7(9-7).
During the regular season matchup between the two teams Trine took all three of the doubles matches before taking the dual by the score of 5-4. With the first half in the books, the team would need to reverse at least one of the matches to get the win. Spirrison looked like he might do so in the No. 3 match taking the first set 6-3. Morris also took his first set in the No. 5 match setting up a defense of his win during the regular season.
Unfortunately, neither match would finish, with the Knights securing wins in the first, second, fourth and sixth matches to secure the victory at 5-2.
Trine finishes the season 14-5 overall following the loss.
