FREELAND, Mich. – The Trine University men's and women's track and field teams swept the weekly Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Athlete of the Week awards. Trine was able to secure two team victories this weekend at DePauw University and competed at "The Monday Meet" at Indiana Tech.
On the women's side, Evie Miller [Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead] was named MIAA Women's Track Athlete of the Week and Valerie Obear [Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern] MIAA Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
Miller broke the school record in the 3000-meter steeplechase event at "The Monday Meet" with a time of 10:23.93. It took more than 30 seconds off her previous best time. She was honored as the Most Outstanding Women's Track Athlete at the Indiana DIII Championships where she was victorious in the 800-meter run (2:11.57) and 1500-meter run (4:27.69).
Obear won multiple events at the Indiana DIII Championships as well: the discus and hammer throw. The senior won the discus with a score of 43.09 meters (141' 4.00") and the hammer throw at 56.60 meters (185' 8.00"). She also had a throw of 55.82 meters (183' 2.00") in the hammer throw at "The Monday Meet" to place second.
For the men, Jake Gladieux [Oregon, Ohio / Whitmer] was tabbed MIAA Men's Track Athlete of the Week while Noah McClellan [Schererville, Ind. / Lake Central] won MIAA Field Athlete of the Week.
Gladieux won the 110-meter hurdle event at "The Monday Meet" with a time of 14.26 seconds (school record) and the 400-meter hurdles at 52.52 seconds. He was also a part of the 4x100-meter relay team at the Indiana DIII Championships, while got an event win at 41.83 seconds. The group of Gladieux, Josh Davis [Sterling Heights, Mich. / Sterling Heights], Danny Vinson [Berrien Springs, Mich. / Berrien Springs] and Greysen Spohn [Peru, Ind. / Peru] are closing in on breaking the school record.
McClellan was a winner in the javelin event at the Indiana DIII Championships with a toss of 52.26 meters (171' 5.00"). He was also second in the triple jump at 12.57-meters (41' 3.00"). He also was a sixth-place finisher in the javelin at "The Monday Meet," the highest of all Trine student-athletes.
This weekend, the Trine track and field teams travel to Indiana Wesleyan to take part in the Little State Championships on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23.
