ATLANTA, Ga. & CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The Trine University men's track and field team split their squad on Saturday afternoon with some student-athletes at Emory University for the Thrills in the Hills Open and others at Cedarville University for the Yellow Jacket Outdoor Open.
THRILLS IN THE HILLS RECAP:
The Thunder men placed fifth overall in a field of 21 collegiate teams in the two-day event. Trine was able to score points in six different events on Saturday, two of which had multiple athletes on the podium.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Jake Gladieux had an outstanding event final to secure second-place. He ran a time of 14.69 seconds with Evan Selby in sixth at 15.42 seconds. Greysen Spohn qualified for the event finals as well, but withdrew. The 3000-meter run had the most Thunder athletes inside the top eight. Gehrig Longe was third with a time of 9:20.86 and Holden Martin placed sixth (9:32.81) and Austin Smith seventh (9:33.33).
Trine had eighth-place finishing spots in three other events on the day. In the 800-meter run, Philip Nemechek ran a 1:56.53 to secure an eighth-place finish. Two field events followed as Brandan Cross was eighth in the discus at 40.73 meters (133' 7.00") and Noah Chew in the shot put at 13.27 meters (43' 6.50").
The relay team of Aidan Lapp, Holden Martin, Lucas Tutrow and Tyler Hartleroad completed the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 8:13.16 and finished fifth overall. In the 4x100-meter relay, Maxwell Harris, Jake Gladieux, William Thonn and Greysen Spohn were ninth at 42.69 seconds, just over one second off the school record mark.
YELLOW JACKET OUTDOOR OPEN RECAP:
At Cedarville, the Thunder tied for 10th place out of 22 collegiate teams, led mostly by field event participants. Five different field events featured a Trine student-athlete in the top 10.
Travis Dowling was sixth overall in the discus at 44.48 meters (145' 11.00"). In the shot put, Alexander Lewis placed seventh with a toss of 14.17 meters (46' 6.00"). A pair of ninth-place finishes were credited to Theodore Samra in the hammer throw (48.12 meters / 157' 10.00") and Nathan Leap in the pole vault (4.22 meters / 13' 10.00"). Finally, Colton Wampler was tenth on the afternoon in the javelin with a toss of 39.84 meters (130' 8.00").
The highlight of the day on the running side came in the 10,000-meter run. Jacob Myers finished the race second with a time of 33:08.45. The 3000-meter steeplechase event had three Trine student-athletes inside the top 20, with Eli Shoup 12th (10:43.59), Matt Hoop 15th (10:46.13) and Price Knowles 17th (11:22.98).
The Spartan Invite at Michigan State University is next on the schedule for Trine track and field. That event kicks off on Friday, March 31.
