FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Trine University men's track and field program took part in the Warrior Open hosted by Indiana Tech on Friday afternoon and secured many of the top marks for the event.
Greysen Spohn led the team in four different events. He was quickest in the 100-meter dash with a fourth-place 10.94-second time and 200-meter dash with a fifth-place time of 22.45 seconds. In the 110-meter hurdles, Spohn finished second with a time of 14.95 seconds and had a best mark of 1.89 meters (6' 2.25") in the high jump.
Other top marks in those events included William Thonn, who placed eighth in the 100-meter dash at 11.14 seconds and Aaron Pike who recorded a seventh-place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.64 seconds). Evan Selby was just behind Spohn with a time of 15.37 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, good for fourth place. Selby was also a runner-up finisher in the 400-meter hurdles (55.92 seconds). Ashton Smith competed in the high jump and notched a top-5 finish at 1.75 meters (5' 8.75").
In the longest event of the meet, the 5000-meter run, Trine made up four of the top eight finishing spots. Ryan Hoopingarner led the way for the team with a second-place time of 14:51.10. Behind the freshman were Matthew Edison in fourth (15:30.50), Jacob Myers in fifth (15:34.95) and Aidan Lapp in eighth (15:43.83). The 1500-meter run featured Tyler Hartleroad, who placed fourth at 4:04.34, and Joseph Packard in seventh at 4:07.78).
The 4x400-meter relay team marked the final top-8 finish for the Thunder, as the team of Selby, Hartleroad, Blane Johnson and Pike went 3:31.94 to score a third-place finish.
To highlight field events, Ethan Spahr brought home the team's only event victory in the triple jump with a score of 12.22 meters (40' 1.25"). Also in the event was Andrew Cogswell, who was third at 11.45 meters (37' 6.75"). The trio of Ben Williams, Eirik Eggen and Ashton Smith had quality scores in the long jump. Williams was fifth (6.24 meters / 20' 5.75"), Eggen was seventh (6.00 meters / 19' 8.25") and Smith eighth (5.99 meters / 19' 8.00").
The final four field events had one Trine student-athlete tally a top-8 spot. Brandan Cross was fourth in the discus at 43.16 meters (141' 7.00"), Colton Wampler was fifth in the javelin at 44.11 meters (144' 9.00"), Dillon Dennison was seventh in the hammer throw at 43.73 meters (143' 6.00") and Kimball Hughes was eighth in the shot put at 13.48 meters (44' 2.75").
In the next team event, the Thunder will compete in the Indiana DIII Championships at DePauw University on Saturday, April 15.
