CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) has unveiled their honorees for 2024 MCVL Postseason Awards. The Trine University men's volleyball team had four student-athletes represented on All-League Teams. The Thunder tied for second with an overall record of 17-6 and a 7-2 mark inside the league, the best record since the program restarted in 2019.
Senior defensive specialist and libero Hunter Haas was named MCVL Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the First Team All-MCVL. It is the fourth consecutive season that the Cincinnati, Ohio native has been tabbed as the league's Defensive Player of the Year and on the First Team.
Haas currently leads all NCAA divisions in career digs at 993 and is one dig away from setting a new school record for most digs in a season. His digs per set in his career is atop all NCAA divisions as well at 3.46 per set. This season, Haas has a mark of 3.58 digs per set, a number good for third in NCAA Division III. He leads the conference in most digs and digs per set for the season (286 / 3.58) and in league play only (128 / 3.76). The team is ranked seventh in digs per set at the NCAA Division III level (12.69).
The MCVL announced senior outside hitter Ted Hofmeister as the league's Offensive Player of the Year and a member of the First Team All-MCVL. It is the third season that the Powell, Ohio native has been recognized as an All-MCVL player, the second time he is represented on the First Team and the first Offensive Player of the Year award in his career.
Hofmeister's 303 kills leads the team and his kills per set of 4.09 is second in the MCVL. He has a hitting percentage of .341, which is fourth in the conference but leads all outside hitters. He is 19th in NCAA Division III in points per set at 4.55. In conference matches, Hofmeister led the MCVL in total kills (158) and kills per set (4.79). He will graduate as Trine's program leader in kills and points. Along with his offensive numbers, he added 174 digs and 31 blocks this year.
Junior opposite Kevin Boncaro has earned First Team All-MCVL in back-to-back seasons. The Rochester, New York native totaled 265 kills (3.40 kills per set), 184 digs (2.36 digs per set), 50 blocks and 21 aces. Boncaro was ranked fifth in the MCVL in points per set at 4.04, as well as sixth in kills per set and ninth in digs per set. Looking exclusively at conference matchups, Boncaro had the fourth-most kills with 126. He was also one of three student-athletes to dig out over 100 opposing attacks with 101 in MCVL matches. He tied for tenth with 22 blocks.
For the first time, the MCVL has named senior setter Nick Woolley as an Honorable Mention selection. In his first season as the team's setter, Woolley recorded 802 assists and his 9.90 assists per set is second in the conference. The Plainfield, Illinois native added 167 digs and 33 blocks to his 2024 resume as well. His 363 assists in conference matches led the MCVL and his 10.68 assists per set is second-most. Woolley is ranked seventh in NCAA Division III in most assists per set.
The MCVL Tournament kicks off on Friday, April 12 at 4 p.m. when #2 Baldwin Wallace University and #3 Trine University meet in the MCVL Semifinal Round. That game will take place at the host site, Wittenberg University.
