ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University softball team picked up an opening round victory in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Softball Tournament by coming out on top of a pitching duel against Alma College, 1-0. Their second game of day was then postponed until tomorrow, Friday, May 6 at 10 a.m.
Sophomore Adrienne Rosey (Schoolcraft, Mich. / Schoolcraft) started the game in the circle and faced pressure right off the back. The Scots would tally back-to-back hits to put runners on second and third with one out. She would settle in and strikeout the next batter and force a fly out to end the inning.
The Thunder offense would respond with pressure of their own in the bottom of the inning. Senior Taylor Murdock (Lapel, Ind. / Lapel) would reach on a fielder's choice and then scored on an RBI single by classmate Ashley Swartout (Westfield, Ind. / Westfield) giving the team the 1-0 lead.
Alma would threaten again in the top of the second and the fourth but Rosey was up for the challenge each time finishing the game with the shutout. She would allow four hits and a walk while striking out seven to secure the victory for the team.
Junior Ellie Trine (Kokomo, Ind. / Kokomo) led the Thunder with two hits in the game both coming right back at the pitcher. Swartout's hit would bring in the lone run.
The tournament is scheduled to continue tomorrow, Friday, May 6 at 10 a.m. when Trine will faceoff with the winner of the second game of today, Calvin University. The rest of the schedule for tomorrow is currently set to be played as scheduled. Stay tuned for updates due to weather.
