HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – Freshman Debbie Hill has been named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Softball Position Player of the Week.
Along with teammate Alexis Michon the Thunder swept this week's awards. The two represent the seventh and eighth MIAA honorees from the team this season. It is the third time that Hill has taken home one of the MIAA weekly awards, the second as a position player.
The team started the week against Hope College picking up a sweep in a pair of close games. Hill made the start in the circle for game one and ended a solid six inning outing with 10 strikeouts and just four hits allowed. Neither team scored in regulation, but Hill got the offense rolling in the top of the eighth recording the team's first RBI on a double. The Thunder went on to win 3-0 in the extra inning contest.
In the second doubleheader of the week, Trine had an offensive explosion against visiting Saint Mary's College. They won the two games by a combined 39-0. Hill was electric in both games at the plate, but had a historic second game. She went two-for-three with a two-run homer, a single and a walk during the first game. In game two, she hit for the cycle finishing four-for-four with a walk in her fifth time up. Those four hits brought home nine runs for the team, the second highest single-game total in program history.
All-told the freshman finished the week with a .583 batting average, a .667 on-base percentage and a mammoth 1.417 slugging percentage. She had seven hits including five for extra bases while bringing in 12 runs.
Trine is set to finish the regular season when they travel to face Kalamazoo College on Friday, May 5. The team will secure the MIAA Championship outright with one win during the doubleheader which is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
