LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- For the fifth consecutive week the Trine University softball team sits atop the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) after being unanimously selected as the best team in the country.
The top eight teams in the poll remained unchanged from a week ago, with the Thunder again receiving all ten first-place votes. The Thunder are 20-1 overall after winning four games in the last 72 hours. Their winning streak now stands at 16 straight. The team dominated the weekend with four run-rule victories and a combined score of 42-0.
During the four-game stretch, Tyra Marcum led the way offenvsively with seven RBIs coming off of six hits with two homers. In the team's 14-0 victory against Anderson (Ind.) University, the freshman opened the scoring with a grand slam in the first inning. Debbie Hill and Emma Beyer each came in just behind Marcum with six RBIs each.
Four different pitchers saw time in the circle for the Thunder, with Alexis Michon recording the most inning with nine. She boasted two of the team's wins and finished with 13 strikeouts. Hill and Lauren Clausen had identical weekends each with five innings of work allowing just one hit each while striking out six. Alex Rodriguez came in for the final inning of the first game against Anderson and recorded a pair of strikeouts.
Trine is scheduled for just one dobuleheader this week, hosting Hiram College on Saturday, March 30. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m.
