ANGOLA, Ind. – On Tuesday evening, the Croxton & Roe Insurance Holiday Classic from the MTI Center kicked off with Asbury University versus Calvin University and continued with the Trine University women's basketball team winning against Geneva College 93-59 after a 33-point fourth quarter.
The 17th-ranked Thunder bounce back after a loss to nationally-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stout and advance to 7-2 overall. The Golden Tornadoes of Geneva are an even 6-6.
Trine doubled up on Geneva with a 24-12 first quarter advantage, led by 11 points from Erin Sherwood off the bench. Sidney Wagner started the game with a pair of made field goals inside and Abby Sanner and Jada Rhonehouse entered the scoring column as well before Sherwood came off the bench and began to make her presence known inside and from deep. Allison Capouch gave the Thunder a double-digit lead at 17-7 after five minutes of play and the defense held the Golden Tornadoes without a point for nearly three minutes to close the period.
Geneva showed more fight in the second quarter with a 7-2 scoring run to start. The Trine lead was cut down to as little as seven at 31-24 with 3:12 to go in the first half before Alexis Snodgrass made a layup off a pass by Addison Hutson and Capouch buried back-to-back three-point field goals. Hutson had a make of her own to complete a 10-0 run before consecutive makes from deep made it an 11-point game at halftime, 41-30.
The teams played fairly even in the third quarter as well, Trine winning 19-16 to make it 60-46 through 30 minutes. Sierra Hinds found the mark from three-point range with three makes from downtown in the quarter. Nine of the final 11 points in the frame came from those three made field goals.
The fourth quarter was all Thunder as they won the period 33-13 to coast to a 93-59 victory. The three-point barrage continued as Hinds and Rhonehouse made a combined three field goals from behind the arc to extend the lead to 69-46. Jordan Walters, Kearston Stout, Anna Grim, Angelina Tringali and Olivia Marks all found the scoring column to secure the win, highlighted by a pair of made three's by Tringali. Despite not getting a basket, Sydney Horton assisted on four makes. Trine was 12-for-19 (63.2%) from the field in the fourth and 6-for-11 (54.5%) from downtown.
28 turnovers by the Golden Tornadoes would spell doom for the visitors. Those miscues led to 41 points on the other end by the Thunder. Trine owned the paint battle 48-16, outscored their opponents 26-4 on the fastbreak and the bench unit produced 55 points for the Thunder. Five student-athletes were in double figures, led by Sherwood with 16 points, Wagner with 14, Capouch with 13, Hinds with 12 and Rhonehouse with 11.
The Croxton & Roe Insurance Holiday Classic proceeds on Wednesday, December 20 beginning at 1 p.m. with Geneva versus Calvin. #17 Trine and Asbury conclude the event with a 3 p.m. tip-off.
